Panthers Fall in Final Home Matches of 2024 Season

The program recognized its 2024 seniors on Saturday evening, the final home match of the year

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team closed out its 2024 home schedule this weekend, hosting Michigan Tech on Friday (Nov. 8) and Northern Michigan on Saturday (Nov. 9).

Match One vs. Michigan Tech
Result: L, 3-1 (-22, 16-25, 13-25, 15-25)
How it Happened
Karley Pretzer opened the match with a kill off an assist from Mehl Hansen, which led to a 4-1 Davenport lead early. After falling behind 6-5, the Panthers recorded four consecutive points, capped by a Kaitlyn Marsh kill. The set remained back and forth until it was knotted at 21 apiece. Marsh then spurred and capped a 4-1 DU rally to win the set 25-22, going ahead 1-0 in the match.

Following the strong opening set, the Panthers were unable to maintain their momentum, dropping the ensuing three sets as they were unable to score more than 20 points in any of them.

Pretzer led the Panthers' offense with 11 kills while swinging at a .308 clip in the loss. Abby Alan secured a double-double for DU, slamming 10 kills and tallying 11 digs. Marsh added nine kills while hitting an efficient .571, while Kaitlin Jordan ended the night with eight kills and four digs. Hansen finished with a team-high 34 assists and Hayley Carr chipped in with a team-high 14 digs.

Match Two vs. Northern Michigan
Result: L, 3-2 (-18, -18, 12-25, 19-25, 14-16)
How it Happened
Alan led the way with 21 kills in the loss for the Panthers, hitting .300 and adding eight digs. The sophomore has now eclipsed 300 kills on the season, which leads the team.

Three straight points in the early stages of the opening set helped push the DU lead to 7-3. Emma Turnquist capped the rally with back-to-back service aces. Marsh recorded a kill off a Hansen assist to conclude another 3-0 rally for DU late into the set, forcing an NMU timeout as the Panthers led 19-15. Davenport closed the set on a dominating 6-1 rally, featuring three kills from Pretzer, to go ahead 1-0 in the match.

Trailing 8-7 in the second set, Pretzer spurred a 5-0 Panther rally with a kill to push them ahead of the Wildcats 12-8. Holding a 21-18 advantage late, another Pretzer kill sparked a 4-0 rally for the Panthers to close out the set, taking a 2-0 lead over NMU.

Northern Michigan came out hot in the third set, eventually going on a 6-1 rally to go ahead 17-8 midway through the set. The nine-point advantage was too much for the Panthers, as the Wildcats avoided the sweep with the 25-12 victory. The Wildcats carried their momentum into the fourth set, coming away with a 25-19 win and forcing a fifth and final set.

In the final set, the Panthers put together a 6-1 rally, going ahead 14-13 and forcing the Wildcats to take a timeout with the game point on the line. However, NMU came out of the break and scored three consecutive points and took down DU 16-14.

Turnquist finished with 10 kills, four aces, three digs and five blocks for the Panthers. Pretzer added eight kills, while Jordan ended the night with seven kills, two aces, four digs and three blocks. Hansen tallied a team-high 45 assists, marking the fifth time this season the junior has eclipsed 40 assists in a match. Carr chipped in with a team-high 23 digs for DU.
