Panthers earn a road victory over Golden Eagles

CHARLESTON, W.V. - Davenport University women's lacrosse grabbed their first win of the season following a 12-8 victory over the University of Charleston.

The Golden Eagles took an early lead (12:46 mark), however, this would be the only time Charleston would have the advantage for the remainder of the match. Roughly two minutes later, Mika Kulynych scored her first of two goals in the game to level the score at 1-1. Soon after, Blakely Malpass took a shot that found the back of the net and gave the Panthers a 2-1 lead, ending the scoring in the first period.

A free-position shot during a man-up opportunity was taken advantage of by Alyssa Bird a few minutes into the second, Bird's only goal of the game, 3-2. With minutes to go until halftime, Theadora Krueger also capitalized on a free-position shot that allowed the Panthers to maintain a lead at the break, 4-3.

The third period was all DU as the Panthers went on a 7-2 scoring run to take control of the game, with goals coming from Gabby Basha, two from Malpass and Maddy Haynes, and one each from Kulynych and Krueger. The final goal by DU came from Basha (free position, man up) which sealed the victory.

Overall, the Panthers were 21-3 for draw controls and allowed 18 shots on goal as Maisy Latus made 10 saves overall.

DU will continue their road trip with a match against Ashland on Sunday, Feb. 25, with a 12 p.m. opening faceoff at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex.
