Panthers Open Spring Break Trip with 5-2 Victory

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Davenport University women's tennis team opened its Florida trip with a 5-2 victory over Warner on Saturday evening at the USTA National Campus.

At No. 1 doubles for DU, Sophie Jackson and Kumiko Yamaguchi took down Riley Cook and Lauren Schiraldi 6-2. Charlotte Zhuwakini and Valentina Moreno won 6-3 over Camila Matos and Keren Alves at No. 2 doubles and the Panthers took the 1-0 lead in the match after securing the doubles point.

Jackson dominated at No. 4 singles, sweeping Victoria Belisario 6-0, 6-0, giving Davenport a 2-0 edge in the match. Slotted at No. 3 singles, Angelica Montano pushed the DU advantage to 3-0, defeating Schiraldi 6-3, 6-2.

Zhuwanki clinched the match in a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles, defeating Cook 6-0, 3-6, 10-8, giving the Panthers their fourth point and securing the win. 

Olivia Kalee picked up the fifth point for the Panthers, getting a 6-2, 7-6 (6) win over Keren Alves at No. 5 singles. The win marked the freshman's first collegiate career victory.

With the win, Davenport moves to 7-3 overall and 5-3 since the start of spring play, while Warner falls to 0-3 on the year.

The Panthers will return to action on Sunday (Feb. 25), taking on Alma at 1 p.m. at the USTA National Campus.
