Panthers begin homestand with 10-6 win over McKendree

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Intensifying their defense in the second half, the Davenport University women's lacrosse team started the week with a 10-6 victory over the McKendree Bearcats.

The win was the second-ever for the Panthers in the all-time series, improving their record to 2-4 against the opponent. DU started the game with the first goal scored (Blakely Malpass; free position) and expanded on the momentum to close the period with a 4-1 lead following two more goals by Malpass (tied for game-high) and one from Brianna Rodriguez.

A much tighter period in the second saw the teams score two goals apiece, with Maddy Haynes scoring two of her three goals for the game (each goal assisted by Gabby Basha) to go into halftime with a 6-4 advantage. The third period was a repeat of the second as two goals from Theadora Krueger (assist Basha; Haynes) allowed the Panthers to maintain a two-score lead.

However, a tighter defensive effort by DU saw the team shut out McKendree for the remaining 22:44 of the contest, with a goal by Rodriguez and Haynes in the final period to assure the Panther victory.

Basha's three assists created a sound offense for the Panthers, with Malpass raking in a team-high five groundballs and three caused turnovers. Maisy Latus' effort in the net saw her record 11 saves for a .647 save percentage.

DU will continue their homestand with a matchup against Quincy on Friday, March 22, with the opening draw at 3 p.m. at the DU Turf Field.
