Panthers Complete Day Two of Midwest Regional

O'FALLON, Ill. - The Davenport University softball team fell to McKendree 4-3 and Maryville 7-0 on its second day at the Midwest Regional Tournament on Saturday afternoon.

Game 1 vs. McKendree
Result: L, 4-3 (8 Inn.)
How it Happened
A big fifth inning from Davenport gave the Panthers a 3-1 advantage late. Alexis Gills brought home Brooke Bernt off a double to get the scoring started.

Becca Daoust scored the second DU run off an RBI from Savanna Disbrow, who flied out to right field. Riley Hasseld drilled a double to center field, allowing Gills to reach home to cap off the scoring run in the fifth.

In the bottom of the fifth, the Bearcats answered with a pair of runs to tie the game at three apiece. 

Davenport had its best chance to regain the lead in the sixth inning, placing runners on first and second with two outs, but could not bring them home.

Despite the loss, the Panthers had more hits (9) than the Bearcats (8).

Brooke Bernt batted 3-for-4, scoring one run to lead the way for DU. Daoust and Gills finished the game with two hits and a double for the Panthers. Hasseld and Hayley Kreiger chipped in with one hit apiece.

Game 2 vs. Maryville
Result: L, 7-0
How it Happened
Cecelia Bell recorded a season-high six strikeouts in the final three innings for the Panthers. Freshman Hailey Whisman pitched the first four innings, delivering four strikeouts.

After scoring three runs in the second inning, the Saints scored one run in the third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings.

Kreiger and Raegen Smith recorded the only two hits of the game for the Panthers, both coming in the seventh inning.

DU will conclude its time at the Midwest Regional Tournament on Sunday (March 3) in a rematch against McKendree at noon at the O'Fallon Family Park in O'Fallon, Ill.
