GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's lacrosse battled against No. 7 Grand Valley State University but couldn't defend their home pitch as the Lakers swept the regular season series 2-0 following the 9-4 win.
The Lakers held a slight advantage after the first 15 minutes of action, but a goal by
Blakely Malpass and
Brianna Rodriguez kept the Panthers in the fight, 3-2. A quick strike by
Theadora Krueger (assist
Maddy Haynes) just under 50 seconds into the second period knotted the score at three apiece. DU managed to win the second, 2-1 after another goal by Malpass saw an even scoreline at the halftime break.
Unfortunately for the Panthers, that would be the final time the team could score. The Lakers held DU to just two shot attempts in the third period as GVSU strung together four unanswered goals to take an 8-4 lead heading into the fourth. Unable to score on the six shot attempts in the final period, the Lakers tabbed the final goal with 8:54 remaining to seal their 15th victory this season.
Krueger tallied three caused turnovers to go along with her goal as
Alyssa Bird led all players with a game-high six groundballs to add to the team's total 22. The Panthers were 16-of-21 on clearance attempts while
Maisy Latus made 10 saves in the effort.
With the regular season in the books, DU will rematch the Lakers as the fourth seed in the GLIAC Tournament. The game is scheduled for Friday, May 3 at 4 PM in Allendale.
