Panthers end season in loss to Lakers

ALLENDALE, Mich. - Davenport University women's lacrosse ended the season in a 16-4 decision won by No. 7 Grand Valley State University in the GLIAC Tournament semifinals. A victory would have advanced DU to the title game for the third time in four seasons.

Early struggles by the Panthers created opportunities for the Lakers to open a 4-0 lead at the end of the first period. Three unanswered goals in the second were finally met with DU's first strike of the game, Brianna Rodriguez taking advantage of a free-position attempt with 5:42 remaining in the half. GVSU managed another goal before the break to increase their lead to 8-1.

Allowing the Lakers to score less than a minute into the third period, the Panthers responded minutes later on an opportunity taken by Blakely Malpass (assist Maddy Haynes). Malpass struck again in the period on a free-position shot, but a 3-1 scoring run by the Lakers left DU facing a 12-3 deficit with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Theadora Krueger (assist Gabby Basha) scored the final goal for the Panthers as the Lakers went on a 4-0 scoring run to seal the victory and their ticket to the GLIAC Tournament Championship.

Defensively, Krueger tallied four caused turnovers and three groundballs, with Maisy Latus making six saves in the effort. The loss capped DU's record at 6-9 overall (1-5 GLIAC).

Krueger, Haynes, Malpass, Rodriguez, Basha, Latus, Jade Remalce, and Alyssa Bird were named to the 2024 Women's Lacrosse All-GLIAC honors moments after the game.
