Panthers can't rally in loss to Bears

ST. PAUL, MN - Davenport University women's lacrosse dropped their first conference game of the year in an 18-15 road loss against Concordia, St. Paul.

The Panthers tabbed the first score and followed it up with two more to take an early 3-0 lead with 8:19 remaining in the first period. DU received a man-up opportunity and capitalized on it, with Mika Kulynych (assist Theadora Krueger) tallying the first goal for the Panthers. Gabby Basha scored again for DU less than two minutes later (assist Kulynych) as a 2-1 scoring run in favor of DU to close out the period knotted the scoreboard at 4-4.

Both sides mirrored one another's scoring run in the second, as the Panthers' four unanswered goals inside of the first five minutes were followed up by four straight by Concordia. DU, again, went on an unanswered run of three goals, but defensive lapses allowed the Bears to go on a 3-0 run to end the half in a tie game, 11-11.

Scoring woes were the highlight for DU in the third period, with Concordia tallying two goals in the 15 minutes. The Bears scored two goals over a nearly seven-minute stretch in the fourth to create their largest lead. However, the Panthers continued fighting, as two more goals (Alyssa Bird, Maddy Haynes) brought the deficit to two with 6:16 remaining.

The comeback effort fell short after Concordia posted a 3-2 run to close the game and take the first of two meetings.

Haynes tied her career-high with a game-high five goals, with two groundballs and an assist to go with it. Krueger was another contributor with four goals, eight draw controls, and two assists, followed by two goals for Blakely Malpass and Bird. The Panthers were 21 of 37 in draw controls, adding six caused turnovers and 22 shots on goals overall.

DU continues their road trip in a faceoff against Northern Michigan in Marquette on Sunday, April 7.
