Panthers close road trip in a loss to NMU

MARQUETTE, Mich. - The Davenport University women's lacrosse team (5-4) lost a 17-8 decision to Northern Michigan University on the road.

Northern Michigan got on the board first and eventually built a 2-0 lead with plenty of time left in the first period. DU managed their first goal at the 5:39 mark in a player-up situation that was capitalized on by Brianna Rodriguez (assist Blakely Malpass). Minutes later, Malpass tabbed her first goal with 2:17 remaining as the Wildcats came out of the period with a 4-2 lead.

Although the Panthers struck first in the second from a goal by Maddy Haynes (assist Malpass), NMU closed the period on a 7-2 scoring run to lead DU 11-4 going into halftime.

Gabby Basha (assist Mika Kulynych), Malpass (player-up, assist Rodriguez), and Theadora Krueger added the last of three goals for the Panthers in the third period but were outscored 5-3 overall by the Wildcats, who held a 16-7 lead with 15 minutes left to play. Adding two more goals to their tally, NMU recorded its first conference win of the year.

Malpass (two assists) and Rodriguez led the scoring as the Panthers were 3-0 on player-up opportunities and recorded 20 shots overall in the effort.

DU returns to Grand Rapids for four straight home games over the next two weeks, with Quincy University up next on Tuesday, Apr. 9.
