Panthers drop final non-conference game of season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University women's lacrosse dropped their final non-conference game in an 18-10 loss to Quincy University.

The Hawks struck first a few minutes into the first period, with Brianna Rodriguez adding the first goal roughly halfway into the period to level the score at 1-1. Defensive lapses plagued the Panthers in the ensuing four-and-a-half minutes as Quincy went on a 4-0 scoring run. With 2:09 remaining in the period, a free-position attempt for DU executed by Maddy Haynes closed the first, 5-2.

Quincy opened the second with two unanswered goals but the Panthers responded with a 3-1 scoring run over the next nine minutes with goals by Theadora Krueger (assist Haynes), Rodriguez, and Blakely Malpass (assist Gabby Basha) to cut the deficit to 8-5 at halftime.

Another unanswered scoring run by the Hawks to open the second half left DU trailing 11-5 with 10 minutes left in the third. Although the Panthers tallied three goals in the period, Quincy outperformed the scoring efforts 5-3 to increase their lead by six goals with one period left to play. Outscoring DU 4-2 in the final period, the Hawks sealed their sixth win of the year.

The Panthers were led by Haynes' four goals (three groundballs, one assist), with Malpass and Rodriguez adding two each and Krueger and Mika Kulynych adding one goal to the team total. DU caused six turnovers while Maisy Latus made nine saves but were outshot 40 to 27 in the effort.

DU continues their homestand on Sunday, Apr. 14, against Grand Valley State University in a return to GLIAC play.
