Panthers draw against Timberwolves on the road

MIDLAND, Mich. - Davenport University women's soccer (2-0-1) avoided their first loss this year following a 1-1 draw against Northwood University.

Seven shot attempts (three on goal) by the Panthers were unsuccessful in the first 45 minutes of play as an aggressive defensive scheme held the Wolves to just two shot attempts with none on target - leading to a scoreless first half.

A foul by DU minutes into the second half gave Northwood a free-kick opportunity less than 10 yards from midfield. Carly Boyd appeared to attempt a deep pass into the box, but a rocket by the junior managed to bounce over the hands of Elizabeth Wolter and gave the Wolves a 1-0 lead (52'). However, the Panthers didn't waiver as a foul by Boyd near Northwood's defensive third gave Haley Diekevers space to operate. Patiently waiting for an opportunity to open, the senior forward sent in a cross perfectly timed by true freshman Ella Chatfield, who headed the ball into the goal and knotted the score, 1-1 (61').

Five shots-on-goal (two by DU) would highlight the remainder of the second as neither side could tally its second score of the day, marking the first-ever draw between the programs with the all-time series changing to 6-1-1 in favor of the Panthers.

DU will close out the week with a tough matchup against Cedarville University for the first meeting in program history on Saturday, Sept. 14 at 2 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
