Panthers drop home opener to Cedarville

CALEDONIA, Mich. - Davenport University women's soccer lost their first match this year (2-1-1) following a 2-1 decision against Cedarville University.

The Panthers came out of the gates aggressively, tallying three shots on net within the first 17 minutes, but couldn't capitalize on their scoring opportunities. Cedarville was held to five shot attempts throughout the first 45 and managed their first score of the match with under 10 minutes before halftime. A through ball by Maddie McConnell set up Alyssa Griner just feet from the goal line, who flicked the ball over the hands of Elizabeth Wolter and put the Yellow Jackets up 1-0 at the break.

Cedarville flipped the aggression on their side in the second as they tallied five shot attempts within 18 minutes while holding DU to two overall. Near the 69th minute, a perfectly-timed cross by Audrey Nelson found Katie Ulmer inside the box, who sent a header into the bottom left of the goal to go up 2-0.

Facing a shutout with under 20 minutes remaining, Taylor Meadows sent a deep shot from 30 yards out that was bobbled by Brooke Ackley and landed inches inside the goal line to give the Panthers their first and only score (73') of the match, 2-1 - recording her first goal as a Panther. Two more shot attempts from each team and frustration fouls made up the remaining 17 minutes as Cedarville took the first-ever meeting between the programs.

The Panthers now enter GLIAC action next week as they travel to Michigan Tech on Friday, Sept. 20.
