Youngblood Makes History on Day Two of Home Opening Tournament

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Rachel Youngblood set a school record for kills in a match by a freshman on Friday afternoon at the DU Student Center, as she registered 21 in a 3-2 loss to Bemidji State.

Fellow freshman Hayley Carr also had a historic match, tallying 34 digs, ranking tied for 10th all-time for digs in a single match in school history and the second most by a freshman.

The Panthers played two games on day two of the Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic. DU took on Northwood to start the day followed by the nightcap against Bemidji State.

Game One vs. Northwood
Result: L, 3-0 (11-25, 14-25, 23-25)
How it Happened
Abby Alan and Youngblood each had a pair of kills early as the Panthers (2-5, 0-0 GLIAC) trailed 6-5 in the early stages of the first set. However, a 13-1 rally by the Timberwolves (5-1, 0-0 G-MAC) moved the DU deficit to double digits (19-6). Davenport stopped the rally, scoring four consecutive points and cutting its deficit to nine (19-10). However, Northwood ended the set on a 6-1 rally, taking down DU 25-11.

Another major run from the Timberwolves in the second set put them on top of the Panthers 18-8. The double-digit deficit proved too much for Davenport, as Northwood took the set 25-14 victory and a 2-0 edge in the match.

An Alan kill early in the third set gave the Panthers a quick 4-3 advantage over the Timberwolves. A few moments later, Alan registered a service ace to help DU maintain its early lead (7-6). However, NU answered with a six-point rally, gaining a five-point lead over Davenport (12-7). Late into the set, Mehl Hansen came up with a clutch setter dump to set the score at 23 apiece, keeping the Panthers alive. Northwood was able to score back-to-back points on the ensuing plays and secure the sweep following the 25-23 win.

Leading the way for the Panthers' offense was Alan with nine kills and three service aces. Hansen added 18 assists and three kills, while Carr notched a team-high 10 kills from the libero spot.

Game Two vs. Bemidji State
Result: L, 3-2 (23-25, -15, -23, 25-27, 12-15)
How it Happened
A tightly contested first set was tied at 18 apiece after a four-point Davenport rally, which featured two service aces from Kynadi Dole. Alan gave the Panthers a 23-22 lead following a kill off an assist from Hansen, forcing the Beavers (4-2, 0-0 NSIC) to take a timeout. Out of the break, BSU capitalized with a 3-0 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match following the 25-23 win.

With the second set tied 12-12, the Panthers assembled an impressive 8-1 run, which featured three kills from Alan to put DU ahead 20-13. Davenport ended the set on a 3-1 run, which was fueled by two kills from Youngblood, giving the Panthers the 25-15 victory and tying the set at 1-1.

Youngblood capped a three-point rally for the Panthers with a kill off an assist from Maggie Juncaj to put DU ahead 8-5 at the beginning of the third set. Moments later, an Alan kill pushed Davenport ahead 11-7, forcing the Beavers to take a timeout. After falling behind by three (17-14), Morgan Tydings set in motion a five-point rally for the Panthers, regaining the lead (19-17) and forcing a second Bemidji State timeout in the set. Kaitlyn Marsh clinched the set with a kill off an assist from Hansen, pushing the Panthers lead to 2-1 in the match.

Trailing 24-20 at the end of the fourth set, the Panthers strung together five consecutive points, which started and ended with kills from Youngblood. However, the Beavers answered with three consecutive points and sent the match into a fifth set.

In the final set, BSU put together a 10-1 rally, giving itself a 14-8 advantage, which proved to be too much for DU, taking the fifth set 15-12 and winning the match.

To go along with her record-breaking 21 kills, Youngblood finished with a .308 hitting percentage and three digs. Alan ended the match with career-highs in kills (19) and digs (17). Carr added three service aces to her 34 digs, while Hansen added 45 assists in the loss for the Panthers.
