Panthers Fall to Griffons on Final Day of Hampton Inn and Suites Classic

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University women's volleyball team concluded its time at the 2024 Hampton Inn and Suites Grand Rapids Downtown Classic on Saturday (Sept. 14) afternoon at the DU Student Center. In their final game of the tournament, the Panthers (2-6, 0-0 GLIAC) fell 3-0 to Missouri Western State University, which is receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Division II rankings.

Kynadi Dole put the Panthers up 2-0 to start the first set, as she recorded a kill off an assist from Mehl Hansen. After falling behind by five (13-8), DU put together a quick 3-1 run, trimming the Griffons' (5-2, 0-0 MIAA) lead to three (14-11). MWSU pulled away late, ending the set on a 5-1 run and taking down DU 25-16 to open the match.

A 10-2 run early into the second set gave the Panthers a commanding 15-6 advantage over the Griffons. The Rally was set in motion by a kill from Kaitlyn Marsh and concluded with an attack error by MWSU. Rachel Youngblood slammed a kill from Hansen, to put the Panthers up 17-10. However, following that play, the Griffons went on a massive 12-1 rally, taking a 22-18 advantage. An attack error by MWSU brought the Panthers within three (22-19), but they ended the set on a 3-0 rally and secured the 25-19 victory, going up 2-0 in the match.

DU got out to a quick start in the third set, going up 4-0 as Emma Turnquist capped the rally with a kill off a Hansen assist. After going down 7-6, Turnquist slammed another kill to spur a 3-0 run and put the Panthers back on top, 9-7. Midway through the set, the Griffons began to pull away behind a 6-2 rally to go ahead 19-13. DU responded with three consecutive kills, coming from Dole, Turnquist, then capped off by Alan. MWSU went on to win the set 25-20, sweeping the Panthers on the final day of tournament action.

Alan ended with her second consecutive double-double for the Panthers, notching 10 kills and 14 digs. Marsh added six kills and three assisted blocks, while Youngblood chipped in with five kills. Hansen dished out a team-high 27 assists, while Hayley Carr led the defensive efforts with 16 digs.
