Preview: DU ranked in Midwest Region as non-league play continues

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Davenport University men's soccer is ranked No. 7 in the Midwest Regional Poll this week after drawing 3-3 with Northwood and stealing a 2-1 road win at No. 11 Tiffin last time out.

Easton Lopez was a force on the offensive attack during the stretch, scoring three goals overall and logging the game-winner against the Dragons. The freshman midfielder leads DU for total goals and points, as Cam Power recorded an assist and a penalty kick conversion for the Panthers between the matches. Sept. 14 marked the first top-25 victory for the Panthers since 2022, and the first top-15 regular-season road win as a GLIAC member.

Improving to 2-1-1 and ready to capitalize on recent success, DU is on the road to start week three with the 2024 home opener on Sunday to cap off the weekend.

Missouri S&T Matchup
A nearly flawless start to the season (3-1) has the Miners one victory shy of tying last season's overall win tally, with their only loss of 2024 decided by a single goal (1-0) at Union University on Sept. 13.

Missouri S&T was selected to finish No. 11 in the GLVC Preseason Poll after a 4-9-2 finish. However, key returns in All-GLVC performer Mike Banasik and junior Nathan Weyrauch have put the Miners in the right direction to finish above expectations. Cavitt Bruhn has started and played every minute in goal so far, tallying four saves on 22 shots faced, with a 0.667 save percentage to boot.

With a No. 7 and No. 8 Midwest Region matchup on tap, Sept. 20 will be the first time the programs have faced each other in over five years. The Panthers won the first-ever meeting in a 3-2 overtime victory at home in 2018.

Lake Erie Matchup
2019 was the last and only time the Storm and Panthers faced each other, as Lake Erie took a 2-1 road win in Caledonia.

After dropping the season opener 5-0 to No. 7 Gannon, Lake Erie has won two straight matches after road wins against UIndy (1-0) and Walsh (1-0). The Storm were projected to win the G-MAC Regular Season Title as the No. 1 selection in the conference preseason poll after an 11-7-4 record in 2023 - Lake Erie losing in the G-MAC Tournament championship and exiting the NCAA Tournament in the second round after clinching their third-straight national tournament berth.

Harry Furlong and Linus Oestlund are the sole goal scorers for the Storm so far, with the true freshmen making their mark early for Lake Erie as the team looks to make title pushes this year.
