Panthers Fall in GLIAC Opener

DETROIT, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team opened conference play on Friday evening, taking on Wayne State at the Matthaei Center. The Panthers (2-7, 0-0 GLIAC) were swept by the Warriors (3-5, 0-0 GLIAC) to start GLIAC action.

Abby Alan and Emma Turnquist each had a pair of kills in the early stages of the first set, giving the Panthers a 5-3 advantage. After falling behind by five (14-9), Alan spurred and capped a 4-1 DU rally to trim the deficit to two (15-13). Shortly after, WSU pulled away behind an 8-1 rally, going ahead 24-15. Rachel Youngblood put a stop to the run with a kill, but the Warriors won the set on the ensuing play off a kill from Kayla Giroux, taking down DU 25-16.

A kill from Kaitlin Jordan off an assist from Mehl Hansen set in motion a 7-1 rally in the second set, putting the Panthers ahead 9-7. However, Wayne State regained the lead shortly after following a 5-1 rally, taking a 14-11 advantage, and forcing a Davenport timeout.  The Panthers came within one of the Warriors (22-21), but Wayne State ended the set on a 3-0 rally, taking the set 25-21 and a 2-0 lead in the match.

After falling behind by seven (13-6) to start the third set, DU strung a 5-1 rally to trim the deficit to three (14-11). After surrendering a pair of points, Turnquist and Kaitlyn Marsh each had a kill to keep the deficit at three for the Panthers (16-13). The Warriors ended the set on a 5-1 rally, taking down the Panthers 25-17 and securing the sweep.
