Panthers Close GLIAC Opening Weekend with a Loss

ALLENDALE, Mich. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team traveled across town to take on No. 16 Grand Valley State on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers (2-8, 0-2 GLIAC) were swept by the Lakers (9-1, 1-1 GLIAC) at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena.

Falling behind by seven (20-13), the Panthers scored three conductive points out of a timeout, trimming their deficit to four (20-16). However, GVSU ended the set on a 5-1 rally, taking down DU 25-17 and going ahead 1-0 in the match.  Grand Valley State rode the momentum into the second set, securing a 25-11 victory and going up 2-0.

Abby Alan and Emma Turnquist each recorded a pair of kills to help guide DU to an early 8-4 advantage. Trailing 23-18, a kill from Abby Welke spurred a 5-1 Davenport run, cutting the deficit to two (24-22) late. On the ensuing play, Jordyn Gates registered the final kill of the contest for the Lakers, giving them the 25-22 victory and sweep over the Panthers.

Leading the Panthers' offense was Alan, slamming 11 kills and a pair of digs in the loss. Turnquist added five kills for the Panthers, while Welke and Kaitlyn Marsh slammed four kills. Mehl Hansen finished with a team-high 12 assists, while Hayley Carr chipped in with a team-high 14 digs.

The Panthers will continue conference action on Friday (Sept. 27) in Michigan's upper peninsula, taking on Northern Michigan at 6:30 p.m. in Marquette, Mich. at Vandament Arena.
