Panthers Conclude Annual Upper Peninsula Trip on Saturday Afternoon

HOUGHTON, Mich. -  The Davenport University women's volleyball team concluded its trip to Michigan's upper peninsula on Saturday (Sept. 28) with a battle against Michigan Tech. The Panthers (2-10, 0-4 GLIAC) fell 3-0 to the Huskies (6-5, 2-2 GLIAC) at the SDC Gymnasium.

In a back-and-forth first set, the Panthers put together a 5-1 rally late to go ahead of the Huskies 22-20. The run was set in motion by a kill from Kaitlin Jordan off a Mehl Hansen assist. Shortly after, a kill from Rachel Youngblood put DU one point away from taking the first set (24-22). However, MTU scored four consecutive points, winning the set 26-24 and taking a 1-0 lead in the match

Davenport jumped out to a 7-5 lead in the second set, as Kaitlyn Marsh had a pair of kills during the early stretch to lead the way for DU. After falling behind 20-14 late in the set, the Panthers strung together an 8-2 rally, which was capped by a service ace from Hansen and tied the set at 22 apiece. Michigan Tech scored three of the ensuing four points and took down DU 25-23, going up 2-0 in the match.

The Panthers fell behind 14-8 in the final set but clawed back behind a 7-1 run, which was sparked by a kill from Marsh and put the score at 15-15. Tech responded with five unanswered points, going on to win the set 15-20 and securing the sweep.

Marsh eclipsed double-digit kills for the first time in her young collegiate career, ending the match with 10 while hitting .381. Jordan finished the day hitting .389 with eight kills, while Youngblood added seven kills and two digs.

Hansen ended the day with a team-high 26 assists for the Panthers. Defensively, Hayley Carr chipped in with a team-high 14 digs, while Sydney Swan finished with a career-high 11 digs to go along with four kills.
