Late goal gives Cedarville 2-1 edge over DU

Box Score CEDARVILLE, Ohio - Davenport University men's soccer dropped to 0-1 on the season after a 2-1 loss to Cedarville University in Ohio.

Early fouls for both sides prevented momentum from building until a dangerous pass by DU inside their box allowed Cedarville's Matthew Weller to make a tackle for an easy strike into the goal (12') - creating a 1-0 lead for the Yellow Jackets. Seven shot attempts (three on target) by the Panthers throughout the remainder of the half couldn't find the back of the net, as Cedarville took their one-goal lead into the break.

Much of the same unfolded throughout the second half until an opportunity with under eight minutes remaining gave DU a chance to level the match. Positioned inside the box, Kirby Eggers sent a pass to the foot of first-year Panther Valerii Burlacenco, sending it into the bottom left corner for the first goal of the season (83').

Before the excitement could wear off, a deep shot by Cedarville seconds later was deflected by Beau Hudd, but Caleb Knight secured the rebound and sent in the eventual game-winning goal for the Yellow Jackets.

Five true freshmen and two transfers saw action for the Panthers, as Hudd, Henry Lopez, Andrew Dykstra, Cam Power, George Deveau, and Max Wilhelm started and played in all 90 minutes. DU led the shot count with 11 total and overall accuracy (four on goal), with Cedarville making three saves and capitalizing on a limited four total shot attempts.

The Panthers will close the weekend with more non-conference action in Kentucky for the team's first-ever matchup against Thomas More on Saturday, Sept. 7, with a 7 p.m. kickoff.
