Panthers down Saints in 2-1 road victory

CRESTVIEW HILLS, KY - Davenport University men's soccer capped the weekend with a strong 2-1 victory over Thomas More in the first-ever matchup between the Panthers and Saints.

A foul on Austin Hall gave the Saints a free kick opportunity nearly 40 yards from the goal, and a pinpointed cross allowed Finn Battenstein to tally the match's first score, 1-0 (8'). With no shot attempts by DU for over half of the first, a tackle made by Cam Power in Thomas More's defensive third created an opportunity for Drew Matyunas to send the ball into the low center, 1-1 (25').

The halftime break saw the teams still tied at one apiece, as over 15 minutes surpassed in the second half until a scoring opportunity rose for DU. A throw-in attempt by the Panthers in the attacking third resulted in true freshman Easton Lopez sending a shot into the net from the inside edge of the box to record his first-ever collegiate and game-winning goal (61').

DU outshot Thomas More 13 to 10, five of which were on target. Beau Hudd tallied his second career start while playing all 90 minutes and making three saves in his first victory.

Improving to 1-1 on the season, the Panthers will be back in action on Thursday, Sept. 12 against Northwood University in a neutral match in Tiffin, Ohio.
