PK by Diekevers lifts DU 1-0 over Quincy

QUINCY, Ill. - Program records were made this weekend for Davenport University women's soccer as the Panthers defeated Quincy University 1-0 in the second-straight shutout victory of 2024.

A scoreless first half was still highlighted by aggression from both teams. Early lapses in the Panther defense resulted in Elizabeth Wolter coming up big for the Panthers who made three saves in the first 11 minutes.

DU eventually worked out the kinks, shifting momentum in their favor by applying pressure on Quincy's defensive line. Preventing the Hawks from getting another shot attempt in the first half, DU's three scoring attempts were saved by the opposing keeper as neither team held a lead at halftime.

Just over seven minutes into the second half, the Panthers were on the attack when a miscalculated tackle by the Hawks was whistled as a foul inside the box, setting up Haley Diekevers for a penalty kick attempt. An easy shot into the right of the net went untouched by Quincy and sealed Diekevers' second career penalty kick, moving her into a tie for second in the all-time leaderboards for PKs and tying for sixth overall for total goals.

The game-winning goal was the sixth of Diekevers' career and allowed DU to extend their winning streak against Quincy to two straight victories, and the third-straight match the Panthers held the opponent scoreless. Wolter made four saves while facing 10 shots through 90 minutes as the true freshman marked her second-straight shutout victory this year.

Non-league action continues for the Panthers next week at Northwood University on Thursday, Sept. 12 at Dean Soccer Field.
