Panthers Fall to #10 Lake Superior State on Thursday

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell 74-58 to No. 10 Lake Superior State on Thursday night at the Bud Cooper Gymnasium.

A pair of Dylan Smith buckets for the Panthers (5-8, 1-4 GLIAC) to tie the game 6-6 with 14:16 remaining in the opening half. On the ensuing possession, Raishaun Brown recorded a steal and a layup on the other end to give Davenport its first lead of the game 6:05 into the contest.

After the Lakers tied the game back up at 8-8, Brown drilled a three-pointer, putting Davenport ahead 11-8. However, LSSU ended the half on a 17-5 run and took a 34-23 advantage into halftime.

Out of the break. Jovan Tucker scored seven points in the first six minutes to keep the Panthers in it, trailing by 14 (44-30) with 14:04 remaining. Moments later, the Panthers pieced together a 10-4 run spanning 2:17, which featured eight points from Joey Cabana.

Despite the spurts of offense, the Panthers were unable to trim their deficit to single digits down the stretch.

Cabana led the way with 17 points, two rebounds, two assists and a steal for the Panthers. Smith added 10 points, three rebounds, five assists, four steals and a block. Brown chipped in with nine points, three rebounds, one assist, two steals and a block, while Tucker finished the night with seven points and a pair of rebounds and assists.

The Panthers will return to action on Saturday (Jan. 11) in Big Rapids, Mich. taking on No. 5 Ferris State at 3 p.m.
