Panthers Nearly Upset No. 5 Ferris State

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team fell to No. 5 Ferris State 74-68 on Saturday afternoon at Jim Wink Arena. 

Despite the loss, the Panthers (5-9, 1-5 GLIAC) held a two-point lead (57-55) over the Bulldogs (16-1, 6-0 GLIAC) with 7:21 remaining following a layup by Jovan Tucker. That basket by Tucker capped a 14-4 DU run, which featured five points from Tucker and Raishaun Brown. However, Ferris State answered with a 12-2 run to go ahead 67-59 with 1:41 left in regulation.

Davenport opened the game on a 10-2 run over the opening 4:36 of the game. Joey Cabana hit a pair of three-pointers in that stretch to help propel the Panthers to the early advantage. Tucker went six-of-six from the charity stripe in the final 1:36 and DU held a 36-34 lead at the half.

As a team, Davenport shot 44.6 percent from the floor (25-for-56), while holding Ferris State to 42.9 percent shooting. Heading into the week, the Bulldogs shot over 50 percent from the floor on the season.

Leading the way for the Panthers with a game-high 24 points to go along with five rebounds and four assists was Tucker. Matyas Vrabel added 12 points and eight rebounds for DU, while Cabana finished with nine points off of three three-pointers.
