MBB Preview: Panthers Continue Conference Play Against GVSU and Roosevelt

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After nearly upsetting the No. 5 team in the nation, the Davenport University men's basketball team continues conference play with games against Grand Valley State and Roosevelt. The Panthers (5-9, 1-5 GLIAC) host crosstown rival GVSU on Thursday evening at 7:30 p.m. followed by a trip to Chicago to take on the newest member of the GLIAC at 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Three of Davenport's top four scorers are freshmen; Joey Cabana (11.6 ppg), Dylan Smith (10.0 ppg) and Matyas Vrabel (9.4 ppg). Vrabel also grabs 7.4 rebounds per contest, ranking second in the GLIAC.

About the Lakers
  • Finished last season 16-15 overall with an 11-7 record in conference play. The Lakers entered the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and advanced to the GLIAC Championship after defeating top-seeded Northern Michigan 82-77.
  • The Lakers returned six of their top eight scorers from last season, including three that averaged double figures in scoring. All-GLIAC performers Ethan Alderink and William Dunn return after each averaged double figures in scoring last season. Alderink has missed the last nine games due to injury.
  • Sophomore guard Kaden Brown leads the GVSU offense so far this season, averaging a team-high 12.8 points per game. Brown transferred to GVSU this past offseason after spending his freshman season at Wright State.
  • As a team, the Lakers shoot the third-highest percentage from deep in the GLIAC (36.8 percent).
  • GVSU has lost six consecutive games after beginning the season 6-2.

About the Lakers
  • In their last season in the NAIA, the Lakers posted a 25-5 overall record and 18-2 record in CCAC in the 2023-24 season. The 2024-25 season is their first as a part of NCAA Division II and the GLIAC.
  • Roosevelt returned just four players from last season's squad. The top returner is Forte Prater, who currently ranks second in the conference in scoring (18.9 points per game). Prater earned week four GLIAC Player of the Week honors (Dec. 2).
  • Senior center Kennedy Brown averages 7.1 rebounds per contest, ranking fifth in the conference. Brown also averages 7.6 points per game while shooting 51.1 percent from the floor. 
  • As a team, the Lakers grab 10.1 offensive rebounds per contest, the fifth most in the conference. 
  • Picked to finish 11th in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
