Panthers Start Strong, Fall Short Against Wildcats

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team opened the new year with a 60-52 loss to Northern Michigan on Thursday evening at the DU Student Center.

Davenport controlled the opening 15 minutes of the contest, getting out to a 17-point lead (32-15) following a three by Joey Cabana. Cabana erupted for a total of 14 points during that opening run to help put the Panthers (4-7, 0-3 GLIAC)on top early, including two three-pointers. However, the Wildcats (9-2, 3-0 GLIAC) ended the half on an 11-0 run, cutting their deficit to six (32-26) heading into the break.

NMU carried its momentum into the opening stages of the second half, going on a 10-3 run and taking a one-point lead (36-35). On the ensuing possession, Jovan Tucker nailed a shot from deep to regain the lead for DU (38-36). The Wildcats answered with an 8-2 run, going ahead of the Panthers 44-40.

Cabana drove the baseline and found Aidan Moon, who knocked down a wide-open shot from beyond the arc, trimming the deficit to one (44-43). Back-to-back three-pointers from Julien Smith pushed the NMU lead to double-digits late (58-48).

Leading the way for the Panthers was Cabana with 16 points, three rebounds, one assist, a steal and a block. Dylan Smith added 13 points, six rebounds and three assists, while Tucker chipped in with eight points and seven rebounds.
