Preview: Panthers Head North to Continue GLIAC Action

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After playing three of its previous four games at home, the Davenport University men's basketball team heads north to Michigan's upper peninsula, matching up with Michigan Tech on Thursday and Northern Michigan on Saturday.

Senior guard Jovan Tucker ranks among the top 10 in the conference in scoring (15.6) and field goal percentage (49.5).

About the Huskies
  • Finished last season with an 11-17 overall record, going 8-10 in GLIAC play.
  • Marcus Tomashek leads the Huskies as one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA Division II, pouring in 25.2 points per game, ranking eighth in the country and first in the conference. The 6-6 guard was selected as the preseason GLIAC Player of the Year and has earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors three times (week 3, 7 & 11).
  • Freshman guard Ty Fernholz shoots 49.4 percent from deep, the third-highest percentage across NCAA Division II.
  • MTU Enters the weekend coming off an 88-85 overtime win over No. 8 Ferris State. In the win, Tomashek scored a career-high 45 points.
  • As a team, Michigan Tech shoots 39.9 percent from beyond the arc, which leads the conference and ranks third in the country.

About the Wildcats
  • Finished the 2023-24 campaign as the regular season GLIAC champions, tallying a 22-11 overall record and 14-4 record in conference action. Fell to Ferris State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament 81-65.
  • Lost their best player from a season ago to the transfer portal, Max Weisbrod. As a sophomore, the guard was selected as the GLIAC Player of the Year, averaging 17.2 points, 4.4 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game. 
  • Only six players returned from last season, leading the way from that group is Dylan Kuehl, a GLIAC Preseason First Team GLIAC selection. Kuehl leads the team in scoring at 15.3 points per game.
  • Senior guard Gerald Gittens Jr. averages 1.5 steals per game, the third most in the conference.
  • NMU has the second-best scoring defense in the conference, only allowing 68.1 points per game, ranking 42nd across the nation.
  • Picked to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches Poll.
