CALEDONIA, Mich. — A strong second-half surge lifted Roosevelt past Davenport University 2-0 on Friday afternoon at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex. Despite Davenport's 14 shots — six on target — the Panthers were unable to capitalize, as Roosevelt goalkeeper Roxana Herrera tallied six saves to preserve the shutout.
The opening half featured a balanced battle for control. Davenport goalkeeper
Elizabeth Wolter anchored the defense with several key stops, including an early denial against Ella Seuberling in the 9th minute. Roosevelt continued to apply pressure, but Wolter's composure and the Panthers' back line held firm to keep the game scoreless.
On the attack,
Madison Fant and
Shay Norden helped generate momentum for Davenport, with Norden forcing a save in the 40th minute. Both teams entered halftime deadlocked at 0-0, each searching for a breakthrough.
After the break, the pace quickened.
Megan Malek fired the first attempt of the half less than a minute in, narrowly missing the frame. Wolter continued to shine in goal, turning away shots from Carisma Rosales and Kenna Wisniewski to keep the game within reach.
Roosevelt finally broke through in the 84th minute when Rosales found the back of the net. Just three minutes later, Lesly Guerra doubled the lead off an assist from Daisy Hernandez-Loya, securing the late cushion. Davenport continued to press, with shots from
Alexis Martinez and
Josie Wilcox, but Herrera remained solid to close out the 2-0 result.
Wolter finished with nine saves on 20 shots faced across 90 minutes.
Olivia Bosworth registered two attempts from the midfield, while Norden added two shots — one on goal. Martinez contributed two on target from the defensive line.
Herrera's six-save effort anchored Roosevelt's clean sheet. Hernandez-Loya tallied an assist and led the team with three shots, while Rosales and Guerra each scored, combining for three of Roosevelt's five shots on target.
The Panthers will return to action this Sunday, Oct. 12, hosting Ferris State at 2 p.m. at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex in Caledonia.
