HAMMOND, Ind. - The Davenport University women's volleyball team fell to Maryville on Saturday afternoon in a four-set match (22-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-18) at the Hammond Sportsplex. Despite the Panthers out performing the Saints in kills (55), assists (53) and digs (91).
Karley Pretzer led the squad with 14 kills on 26 attempts, hitting at a season-high .462 clip. Madison Berry facilitated the offense by recording 41 assists over four sets. Hayley Carr anchored the defense with 27 digs. Maggie Juncaj chipped in with 16 digs.
Davenport started the first set with strong offensive execution, taking an early lead over Maryville with key kills from Abby Alan and Amelia Werner, assisted by Madison Berry. A service ace by Hayley Carr extended the advantage to 4-1. The Panthers maintained momentum, with Sydney Swan and Livi Overbeek contributing to a 16-8 lead. Despite a surge from the Saints, which narrowed the gap to 18-17, Davenport responded with critical points from Werner and Swan.The set concluded with a decisive 7-0 run by Davenport, capped by an attack error by Lynsey Batson of the Saints, securing a 25-22 victory to close the set.
Kills from Alan and Swan helped DU gain an early 2-0 lead in the second set. Midway through the set, the Saints extend their lead to 14-8 behind a 7-0 rally. Davenport managed to cut into the deficit with a 5-1 run, featuring kills from Alan and Swan. As the set closed, Davenport fought to stay within striking distance, with Pretzer and Kaitlin Jordan adding key points. Nonetheless, the Saints secured the set with a final score of 25-18, tying the match 1-1.
Midway through the third set, Davenport found some rhythm with a series of kills from Pretzer and Werner, cutting into the Panthers deficit to three (13-10). Despite these efforts, the Saints extended their advantage, reaching a 20-12 lead. In the closing stages, Davenport mounted a late surge with Pretzer's multiple kills and a service ace by Sydney Swan, bringing the score to 23-19. However, the Saints secured the set with a final pair of kills to close it at 25-19.
Pretzer notched three kills in the early stages of the final set as the Panthers trailed 9-7 early. Despite their efforts, the Saints countered effectively, pushing their lead to 20-15. Pretzer continued to contribute with several key kills, yet the Saints capitalized on attack errors to move ahead. As the set progressed, Davenport faced a challenging deficit. Despite a late kill by Albright and an attack error by the Saints, Maryville closed out the set with a 25-18 victory, securing the 3-1 win.
