Berry Notches Fourth Double-Double in Loss to #15 FSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. -  The Davenport University women's volleyball team dropped a four-set match to No. 15 Ferris State  at the DU Student Center on Tuesday evening, with scores of 25-19, 16-25, 18-25, 15-25.

Madison Berry led the Panthers (7-7, 4-3 GLIAC) with a double-double, notching 38 assists and 12 digs, as well as five kills. Hayley Carr recorded a team-high 15 digs, anchoring the defensive side. Kaitlin Jordan added a team-high 11 kills and 3 block assists, finishing with a total of 13.5 points. Julia Frederick contributed 14 digs, which tied a career-high she set earlier this season.

Davenport opened set one with a strong start, capitalizing on early errors by the Bulldogs (11-4, 6-1 GLIAC) to take a 2-0 lead. Amelia Werner and Morgan Tydings contributed key defensive plays, including a block that helped maintain momentum. Ferris State briefly rallied to tie the score at 4-4, but DU regained control with a service ace from Frederick, pushing the lead to 9-8. In the latter stages, Davenport's offense surged with a decisive run, highlighted by kills from Jordan and Werner. The team extended their advantage to 24-19 and closed the set with Jordan securing the final point, resulting in a 25-19 victory to take the first set.

The second set started with a defensive stand for the Panthers, highlighted by blocks from Tydings and Jordan that led to a 4-1 advantage. Alan contributed with a kill, assisted by Berry, extending the early lead. Despite this momentum, the Bulldogs countered with a series of plays, eventually closing the gap. Midway through the set, the Bulldogs surged ahead with a 6-0 run, taking advantage of kills by Emily May and Logyn Geren. Davenport fought back with Tydings and Jordan both landing kills, but FSU maintained its lead. Despite a late kill by Karley Pretzer, the Bulldogs sealed the set with a 25-16 win, tying the match 1-1..

In set three, Davenport found themselves in a tightly contested back-and-forth early on, with Jordan and Sydney Swan contributing key kills to keep the game level at various points. Juncaj's service ace momentarily gave Davenport a lead, but the Bulldogs quickly responded to reclaim momentum. As the set progressed, Davenport managed to stay within striking distance thanks to consistent offensive efforts from Swan and Berry, which helped narrow the deficit. The set closed with Davenport trailing as Gabby Piazza's kill sealed the set for the Bulldogs, concluding the set at 25-18 in favor of the visitors.

In the final set, Davenport faced a challenging start as the Bulldogs quickly built a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on a series of attack errors. Davenport managed to respond with a kill by Jordan, narrowing the deficit slightly. Despite this, the Bulldogs maintained momentum, extending their lead to 9-1.The Panthers  found a rhythm with consecutive kills by Swan, bringing the score to 9-4. Jordan and Alan contributed further, tightening the score to 11-8. However, the Bulldogs countered with a strong offensive push, widening the gap to 20-8. Werner and Berry delivered crucial points to bring Davenport closer at 20-13, but the Bulldogs held firm. The set closed with the Bulldogs taking the set 25-15. This concluded the match with the Bulldogs securing a win.

Looking ahead, the Panthers will travel to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to take on Lake Superior State on Friday (Oct. 10) at 7 p.m.
