GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - After a season without playing each other, Davenport and Western Michigan renewed acquaintances on the ice in one of the longest all-time series played for the Panthers against any opponent. DU improved to 40-6 against the Stallions with a pair of victories over the weekend. The Panthers won 4-2 on home ice on Friday and had an even better result with a 5-1 triumph in Kalamazoo on Saturday.
The former GLCHL foes tangled on Friday evening at Patterson Ice Center and the Panthers got off to a fast start and never trailed. Davenport scored the first four goals of the game and the Stallions finished with two goals.
Ryder McMillen opened up the scoring at 3:28 of the first period with his sixth goal of the season from
Bryan Fenlon and
Jake Alton.
Robert McLaughlin added his first goal of the season in the first period at 17:52 from
Zach Schneider and
Branwen Pollett. Pollett scored on the power play at 2:45 of the second period from
Brendan Bauer and goaltender
Kyler Lowden. McMillen contributed his second goal of the game and seventh of the season at 11:32 from
Taber Gutschick and
Peter Stojcevski.
Jameson Bain scored both goals for the Stallions increasing his season total to four. WMU finished 0-for-4 on the power play compared to 1-for-5 for Davenport. Lowden stopped 23-of-25 shots and his counterpart Chris Mazurek stopped 41-of-45 shots.
Davenport scored three times in the first period on Saturday at Wings Event Center to set the tone. Fenlon scored his first goal of the season at 10:25 of the first period from Bauer and
Ryan Blackburn. Rocco Gonzalez tied the game at 13:39 with his first goal of the season from Luke Grutta.
Jack Kelly scored the game-winning goal at 16:24 with assists from
Simon Davidson and Blackburn. McMillen increased the lead to 3-1 with 17 seconds left in the period with assists from Alton and
Luke Mikkola. Bauer notched a power play goal at 15:15 of the second period as McMillen and
Dylan Jouppi got helpers.
Noah Bradburn scored his third goal of the season just 12 seconds into the third period with assists by
Kieran Thiessen and Matthew Carlson.
Davenport finished 1-for-3 on the power play and Western Michigan went 0-for-3 as DU had a perfect penalty kill for the weekend.
Reid Ramsay got the start in goal for Davenport and stopped 20-of-21 shots. Gage Cercone stopped 35-of-40 shots for the Stallions. The Panthers will next focus their attention on the powerful Adrian Bulldogs. They travel to Adrian on Thursday for a 7:00 PM puck drop and return home on Friday for a 7:30 PM start against the Bulldogs.
