LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Davenport ACHA men's Division 1 hockey team pulled back to even on the season (7-7) with a weekend sweep at Louisville. The team had split several series so far this season, but got the best of the Cards 8-3 on Friday and 4-3 in overtime on Saturday.
Davenport had an offensive explosion with a season-high eight goals on Friday night. DU recorded 45 shots on goal and limited the Cards to 24. DU scored at least two goals in each period and had four goals in the second period to open up a convincing lead.
Louisville got on the board first, but the Panthers responded with back-to-back goals by Matthew Carlson and
Noah Bradburn. The Cards tied it up at 2 late in the period as Andrew Browe scored his ninth goal of the season.
Jack Kelly got the successful second period off to a good start at 8:48 with his fourth goal of the season from
Brendan Bauer and
Peter Stojcevski. The Cards even it again at 3 at the 12:31 mark, but then it was all Davenport the rest of the way. DU would go on to score four straight power play goals to skate away with the big margin.
Ryder McMillen scored twice in the second period. Carlson scored his second of the game and fourth of the season at 9:54 of the third period.
Branwen Pollett ended the scoring at 17:00 unassisted. DU would finish a perfect 4-of-4 on the man advantage.
Kyler Lowden stopped 21 shots on the evening in goal for the Panthers.
Saturday's game was a different story as the Cards came out with a vengence in the first period to take a 3-0 lead. Jack Bowers, Cameron Morrow, and Noah Malcolm each found the back of the net for Louisville.
The Panthers were able to weather the storm as neither team scored in the second period. The third period belonged to DU who hit another gear.
Taber Gutschick scored his first goal of the season at 14:57 on the power play with Carlson adding an assist. The barrage continued at 16:18 as Bauer notched his eighth goal of the season from
Zach Schneider. The tying goal came at 19:06 from Stojcevski from
Dylan Jouppi and Gutschick.
In overtime, the 3x3 format allows for free-wheeling hockey and Davenport was able to take advantage late in the period. At 4:28, it was Kelly getting his fifth goal of the season from
Luke Mikkola and Bauer for the winner. Lowden got another start in net and made 32 saves in the victory.
The Panthers will be back on the ice next weekend in a big weekend against Grand Valley State. The teams will play in Hudsonville on Friday (8:30 PM) and return to Grand Rapids for a Saturday 8:00 PM game at Patterson Ice Center.
