ALLENDALE, Mich. - The No. 5-seeded Davenport University women's volleyball team fell to the No. 5-seeded Grand Valley State in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament, 26-24, 25-13, 25-16, at the GVSU Fieldhouse Arena on Wednesday evening.
DU opened the first set with a strong start, capitalizing on a series of errors by GVSU and an early kill by Alan to establish a 4-1 lead. The momentum continued as Livi Overbeek and Karley Pretzer each contributed kills, extending Davenport's advantage to 10-4. However, the Lakers responded with a series of successful plays, closing the gap and eventually tying the score at 12-12. As the set progressed, both teams exchanged points, maintaining a tense back-and-forth battle. Davenport briefly regained the lead at 19-18 after consecutive service aces by Kaitlin Jordan. Despite this, the Lakers managed to level the score multiple times, eventually securing the set 26-24 following a late series of points.
In the second set, the Lakers pulled ahead with a 4-1 lead early . Pretzer and Jordan helped Davenport rally back, leveling the score at 5-5 with kills. However, the Lakers responded with a series of attacks, regaining the lead and extending it to 14-9. DU continued to fight, with Alan and Amelia Werner contributing kills to keep the team in contention. Despite these efforts, the Lakers were able to push the score to 20-11. The set concluded with the Lakers securing a 25-13 victory, closing with a decisive kill by Kendall Stover.
Davenport opened the final set with a 2-0 lead. The Lakers responded quickly, tying the score at 3-3 with a series of kills. As the set progressed, the Lakers found momentum, building a 9-5 lead. Davenport answered back with kills from Alan and Overbeek, narrowing the deficit to 17-13. Davenport's efforts to cut the gap included key kills from Pretzer and Julia Frederick, but the Lakers maintained their edge. The set concluded with the Lakers securing a 25-16 victory, closing the set strongly to capture the match.
Leading the way for the Panthers was Pretzer, with 12 kills and two digs. Alan added 10 kills and three total blocks. Ashley Arceo and Madison Berry each finished with double-digit assists for DU. Frederick and Hayley Carr each notched 11 digs in the loss.
