MBB PREVIEW: DU Travels to Parkside, Purdue Northwest

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team continues conference play on the road, taking on Parkside and Purdue Northwest. The Panthers will battle against Parkside on Thursday at 8:30 p.m. EST in Kenosha, Wis. and Purdue Northwest on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. EST.

Last weekend, Matyas Vrabel notched his fourth double-double of the season. The freshman big man scored 10 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in a 67-56 loss to No. 16 Ferris State. Senior guard Jovan Tucker finished the game against the Bulldogs with a career-high 13 rebounds while adding nine points, four assists and two steals for DU.

About the Rangers
  • In 2023-24, the Rangers finished with a 13-16 overall record and an 8-10 record in conference action. Fell 84-82 to Ferris State in the opening round of the GLIAC Tournament. 
  • Josiah Palmer is the top returner for UWP from a season ago. The guard was a Second Team All-GLIAC selection a season ago and a preseason Second Team All-GLIAC honoree this year. He is averaging 14.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.8 assists (leads GLIAC) per game. 
  • Junior guard Jack Rose leads the squad in scoring, pouring in 16.1 points per game, the sixth most in the GLIAC.
  • The Rangers are 7-2 in their last nine games, including wins over nationally ranked Ferris State and Lake Superior State, both of which were inside the top 10 in the NCAA Division II national rankings.
  • UWP has the third-best scoring defense in the conference, giving up 67.7 points per game.

About the Pride
  • Finished last season with a 13-16 overall record, going 7-11 in conference play. Lost in the opening round of the conference tournament to Northern Michigan.
  • PNW has a different-looking squad in 2024-25 with its roster comprised of 10 newcomers and five returners.
  • Leading the Pride is Collin Albert, scoring a team-high 15.2 points per game. The junior guard also averages 3.4 rebounds and 2.3 assists, while shooting 38.1 percent from the floor.
  • The Pride have the third-best scoring offense in the GLIAC, pouring in 78.4 points per game. However, PNW has the worst scoring defense in the conference, allowing 81.3 points.
  • Their best win of the season came over nationally-ranked (No. 12) California State University, Dominguez Hills (96-86). Last time out, PNW picked up its second win of the season over Roosevelt, defeating the Lakers 74-87 in overtime.
