MBB PREVIEW: Panthers Welcome Saginaw Valley, Wayne State

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - With just four games remaining in the regular season, the Davenport University men's basketball team is set to host Saginaw Valley State and Wayne State this weekend at the DU Student Center. The Panthers (1-15, 5-19 GLIAC) welcome SVSU on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. and WSU on Saturday at 3:00 p.m.

The freshmen frontcourt duo of Matyas Vrabel and Dylan Smith are coming off an impressive weekend. Vrabel notched his fifth double-double of the season against Parkside on Thursday (Feb. 13) and he currently leads the GLIAC in rebounds per game (7.3). Smith recorded a season-high 20 points against Purdue Northwest last Saturday (Feb. 15).

About the Cardinals
  • In 2023-24, the Cards finished with a 13-14 overall record, going 6-12 in conference action. 
  • Toodles Seal, a Second Team All-GLIAC honoree a season ago, was a Preseason Second Team All-GLIAC selection for the 2024-25 season. Last year, the guard averaged 18.5 points per game, which ranked third in the conference. Through 23 games, the senior is leading the squad in scoring once again, pouring in 16.3 per contest, the sixth most in the GLIAC.
  • Freddie McIntosh is the sharpshooter for the Cards, shooting a team-high 36.7 percent from deep. The senior ranks first in the conference in three-pointers per game (3.1) and second on the team in points per game (15.5).
  • SVSU enters the weekend on a four-game losing streak.
  • The Cards are fighting to make the postseason conference tournament, currently tied for No. 8 in the GLIAC standings. Only the top eight of 11 teams make the postseason GLIAC Tournament.

About the Warriors
  • Last season, the Warriors finished with a 14-15 overall record and a 7-11 record in GLIAC action. As the No. 7 seed in the GLIAC Tournament, the Warriors upset No. 2-seeded Lake Superior State 87-78 in the opening round on Wednesday, March 6.
  • Their top returner from a season ago is Rob Lee Jr. who was named the GLIAC Freshman of the Year in 2023-24, the first player in program history to receive the award. Lee Jr. was a Preseason Second Team All-GLIAC selection for the 2024-25 season. The sophomore is averaging 16.3 points per contest, which ranks inside the top 10 in the conference.
  • Alongside Lee Jr. the Warriors have three other players averaging double-figures; Tarmario Adley (14.4), Carmelo Harris (13.8) and Carlos Paul III (10.4). Adley leads the conference in steals per game (1.76), while Harris is second in the GLIAC in free throw percentage (85.9).
  • Currently No. 7 in the GLIAC standings, one game back of Grand Valley State.
