MBB PREVIEW: Panthers Prep for Final Games of 2024-25 Season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport University men's basketball team is set to compete in its final two games of the 2024-25 season, heading to Grand Valley State on Tuesday (Feb. 25) and hosting Roosevelt on Thursday (Feb. 27) to close the season.

Aidan Moon is coming off the best two games of his career, including his first caterer double-double against Wayne State (Feb. 22). The sophomore finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds and five three-pointers, all marking new career-highs.

About the Lakers 
  • Finished last season 16-15 overall with an 11-7 record in conference play. The Lakers entered the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed and advanced to the GLIAC Championship after defeating top-seeded Northern Michigan 82-77.
  • The Lakers returned six of their top eight scorers from last season, including three that averaged double figures in scoring. All-GLIAC performers Ethan Alderink and William Dunn return after each averaged double figures in scoring last season. Alderink has missed the last 21 games due to injury.
  • Sophomore guard Kaden Brown leads the GVSU offense so far this season, averaging a team-high 13.3 points per game as the sixth man for the Lakers. Brown transferred to GVSU this past offseason after spending his freshman season at Wright State.
  • As a team, the Lakers grab the second most rebounds per game in the GLIAC (38.3) and are tied for first in offensive rebounds per game (11.9).
  • GVSU has won four of its last six games, including wins over nationally-ranked Lake Superior State and Ferris State.

About the Lakers 
  • In their last season in the NAIA, the Lakers posted a 25-5 overall record and an 18-2 record in CCAC in the 2023-24 season. The 2024-25 season is their first as a part of NCAA Division II and the GLIAC.
  • Roosevelt returned just four players from last season's squad. The top returner is Forte Prater, who currently ranks second in the conference in scoring (18.4 points per game). Prater earned week four GLIAC Player of the Week honors (Dec. 2).
  • Forward Griffin Yaklich averages 7.2 rebounds per contest, tied for the second most in the conference. Yaklich also averages 6.8 points and 2.7 assists per contest.
  • As a team, the Lakers have the third-best turnover margin in the GLIAC (1.15) forcing 11 turnovers per game while giving up 9.8 turnovers per contest.
  • Currently in ninth place in the GLIAC standings, fighting for a spot in the postseason GLIAC Tournament with Saginaw Valley (No. 8).
