Freshmen Frontcourt Thrives in Final Game of 2024-25 Season

Matyas Vrabel and Dylan Smith accounted for 62 percent of DU’s scoring.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Matyas Vrabel poured in a season-high 22 points as the Davenport University men's basketball team fell 73-60 on Thursday evening at the DU Student Center. The freshman big man also grabbed eight rebounds and dished out one assist in the loss for the Panthers (5-23, 1-19 GLIAC).

Fellow freshman Dylan Smith ended the night with 15 points, nine rebounds, four assists and one steal for DU. The frontcourt tandem of Vrabel and Smith combined for 37 of the team's 60 points and half of the squad's rebounds (17-of-34).

After heading into the break trailing by seven (36-29), the Panthers opened the second half with a bucket by Jovan Tucker to trim the deficit to five (36-31). The Lakers grew their advantage to 14 before Davenport stormed back with a 15-3 rally to come within two points (50-48) with 8:43 remaining. A corner three-pointer from Jonas VanderWoude capped the run.

The Panthers put together a 9-2 run with 6:45 remaining, set in motion by a pair of made free throws by Vrabel. However, Roosevelt ended the game on a 10-0 run to finish the final 1:35.

Aidan Moon ended the game with seven points and two rebounds for the Panthers, while Raishaun Brown chipped in with six points, including two three-pointers.
