GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The rebounding category told the story in Thursday's season finale for the women's basketball team against Roosevelt. The glass work by the Lakers proved to be a major factor why they won the game 62-50. Roosevelt had 54 rebounds including 24 offensive boards. Those offensive boards led to 25 second-chance points compared to just 10 for Davenport on their 10 offensive boards. Kencia Levasseur had eight offensive rebounds and 12 total to lead the Lakers. Marie Outlay was one rebound behind her and she grabbed six offensive rebounds of her own to go with 15 points for the double-double. Jayla Turchin led RU with 18 points and grabbed eight rebounds.
Davenport led 12-11 at the end of the first quarter and held Roosevelt to 28.6 percent shooting including 1-of-7 from behind the arc. Davenport kept the lead until the 7:13 mark when Outlay had a put back layup to give the Lakers a 17-16 lead. DU would tie the game twice, but the Lakers used an 8-0 run in the late stages of the second quarter to lead 27-19. The Roosevelt lead was 29-21 at the break and they shot 41.2 percent in the quarter compared to 30.8 percent by Davenport.
The Panthers would cut into the deficit down to three points on two different occasions in the third quarter.
Jaci Walker had a jumper at the 3:42 mark to make it 40-37. The Lakers again surged ahead by scoring the next seven points to lead 47-37 with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter. Five points was the closest that DU would get in the fourth quarter early on. The Lakers extended the lead to 59-42 after a 10-0 run capped off by Outlay's put back layup with 4:08 to play.
Roosevelt would shoot 34.9 percent in the second half and the second chance points were 15-1 in the second half. Davenport shot 43.3 percent in the second half but just 2-of-10 from deep. Walker finished with seven points, one rebound, one assist, one steal, and one block in her final game.
Lillee Gustafson contributed her 28th career double-double and seventh in her senior year with 10 points and a team-high 14 rebounds. She went out with back-to-back double-doubles this week. Davenport concludes the season with an overall record of 6-22 (4-16 GLIAC).
