Panthers Sweep Warriors in GLIAC Opener

DETROIT, Mich. - The Davenport University softball team picked up a pair of wins in their first GLIAC contest of the 2025 season, defeating Wayne State on Saturday afternoon. With the wins, Davenport sits at No.1 in the conference standings, tied with Grand Valley State.

Game One
Result: W, 2-0
How it Happened
It was a strong defensive performance for both sides through six innings, as the two teams were held scoreless heading into the seventh.

In the final inning, Peyton Smith notched a triple in the opening at-bat. With two outs on the board, Madison Cole drove home Smith with a single through the left side, putting the Panthers (11-11, 2-0 GLIAC) ahead 1-0.

Kailyne Luna singled on the ensuing at-bat to place runners on first and second for DU. Cole then reached home following a single to right center field by Kylie Hegland. In the bottom of the seventh, the Warriors (11-14, 0-2 GLIAC) were unable to answer, only registering one hit.

Hailey Whisman pitched all seven innings, recording seven strikeouts in the win for Davenport.

Davenport was led by Brooke Bernt, finishing the game batting 2-for-3. Six other Panthers ended the game with a hit; Cole, Luna, Hegland, Ally Prasnjak, Alania Schwanke and Smith.

Game Two
Result: W, 5-2
How it Happened
Trailing 1-0 heading into the third inning, the DU offense recorded four hits and two runs to go ahead 2-1. Coe secured the first hit of the inning to get this going. With runners on first and second, Hegland singled to right field, allowing Cole to reach home. Savana Disbrow then brought home Luna for the second run of the inning.

The Panthers proceeded to score a run in three of the four remaining innings to complete the sweep over WSU.

In the circle, Hannah Tahaney pitched all seven innings, recording five strikeouts in the win.

Disbrow led the way for Davenport, batting 3-for-4 with two RBIs and one run scored. Cole added two hits and one run for DU, while Luna chipped in with one hit and two runs scored.

Up Next
The Panthers will travel to University Center, Mich. to take on Saginaw Valley State at noon.
