GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The women's lacrosse team is back after a three-game road trip to Colorado where they posted a 2-1 record and won their last two games of the trip in convincing fashion. They defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 21-6 on Feb. 27 and concluded the trip with a 19-7 win over Fort Lewis on Mar. 1 in Denver.
Blakely Malpass was named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. She finished with seven points including tying her career-high with five goals and also had two assists against Colorado Springs. She followed that up with two goals and one assist in a win against CSU-Pueblo. She also had three ground balls, two draw controls, and one caused turnover in that game. Even though the stats from Fort Lewis was not in consideration towards the award, Malpass still ended with four goals and two assists against the Skyhawks. Malpass is currently leading the team with 19 points including 13 goals. She is also ranked third in NCAA Division II with 2.0 free-position goals per game.
Maddy Haynes tied a career-high with six goals against Fort Lewis and was 6-of-6 in shot percentage. She also had three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Haynes is currently second in the GLIAC with 2.0 caused turnovers per game. Theadora Kreuger had a five-point game with three goals and two helpers. She also won three draw controls and caused two turnovers. Freshman
Zoe Cassell has started in goal all four games this season. She has a 2-1 record with a 10.29 goals-against average. Zoe ranks first in the GLIAC and 31
st in Division II in goals-against average.
Findlay enters the week with a 1-3 record overall. They defeated Lewis 11-10 back on Feb. 28 on the road. The Oilers built an 8-2 lead in the second quarter before the Flyers stormed back. Lewis trailed 11-7 with 14:08 left in the game and scored the last three goals. Their final goal came at 4:41 remaining, but a yellow card at the 2:03 mark left the Oilers down a player in a crucial moment. Tessa Chuba was the go-to gal in this one with eight goals and two assists for Findlay. She also led the team with five draw controls and four ground balls. The Oilers have used three goalkeepers with Josie Owens leading the team with 27 saves. Caroline Weber leads the team in minutes played (107:05) and has 18 saves.
Ashland is 2-2 overall and played a familiar opponent on Wednesday, Mar. 5 at Colorado Springs. The Eagles lost 16-10, while DU suffered a similar fate by a score of 18-13 against the Mountain Lions back on Feb. 25. Ashland has traded wins and losses this season and on Wednesday got four goals from Carlie Wilson. Tori Wanat added two goals, 11 draw controls, and three ground balls. Ashley Fisher led the team with four assists. Back on Mar. 3, Fisher was named the G-MAC Women's Lacrosse Athlete of the Week. She had seven goals and five assists in two games against Lock Haven and CSU-Pueblo.
