Panthers Set for Pivotal Home Weekend Against Wayne State and #19 GVSU

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Coming off two sweeps in their GLIAC opening weekend, the Davenport University women's volleyball team will look to ride that momentum into this weekend, matching up against Wayne State and No. 19 Grand Valley State on Friday and Saturday at the DU Student Center. 

DU, WSU and GVSU are all 2-0 in conference play and all have yet to drop a set through two matches. 

Player of the Week… Times Two
Madison Berry and Hayley Carr each earned GLIAC Player of the Week honors following their performances last weekend.  

Berry earned Setter of the Week honors after finishing with match-highs in assists twice this weekend, finishing with 36 against Northern Michigan (Sept. 19) and 42 against Michigan Tech (Sept. 20). In the win over the Huskies, she also garnered 13 digs, marking her third double-double of the season. The freshman currently leads the conference in assists per set (11.0). She is the second Panther in school history to receive GLIAC Setter of the Week honors. 

For Carr, she was named the GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week, playing a pivotal role in both wins over the weekend. She led the squad in digs against both Northern Michigan (16) and Michigan Tech (25). In the win over the Wildcats, she notched a career-high six service aces in just three sets of action. She also recorded three aces against Michigan Tech. The sophomore is the third Panther to receive the honor in school history.

About the Warriors
  • Last Season, the Warriors finished 14-13 overall and 11-5 in conference action. Entered the GLIAC Tournament as the No. 4 seed, falling to Michigan Tech in the opening round. 
  • Returned three of its four All-GLIAC performers;  Kayla Giroux,  Kayla Dulgar and Kendyl Andrews. Giroux also received All-American honors as a junior.
  • Through nine matches, Giroux is one of the most efficient hitters in the nation, swinging at a .416 clip, ranking 17th across NCAA Division II and first in the conference.
  • As a team, the Warriors lead the conference and rank seventh in the country in opponent hitting percentage. 
  • Receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Division II National Rankings.
  • Picked to finish third in the GLIAC Preseason Coaches' Poll.

About the Lakers
  • Last season, the Lakers finished 28-4 overall, going 14-2 in GLIAC competitions. Advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional semifinals, falling 3-2 to Findlay in Big Rapids, Mich.
  • Lost their top player from a season ago, Jordyn Gates, who was an AVCA All-American performer.
  • Return four All-GLIAC honorees from a season ago; Kendall Stover (First Team), Paige Sanders (Second Team), Meghan O'Sullivan (Second Team) and Brianna Stawski (Honorable Mention). Sanders has been sidelined for the entirety of the season after suffering an injury prior to the season-opener in Colorado.
  • As a team, the Lakers rank 14th in NCAA Division II and first in the conference in blocks per set (2.52).
  • Enters the weekend on a four match winning-streak, sweeping all of those opponents.
  • Receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Division II National Rankings.
