GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Davenport men's ACHA Division I hockey team had a never-say-die attitude on Wednesday as they found themselves down 4-1 after two periods at No. 10 Calvin. The Panthers were able to score three goals in the third period to force overtime and earn a point, before falling in a shootout.

Ryan Blackburn scored the only goal of the first period for his fifth of the season at 13:43 from Branwen Pollett. The Knights woke up in the second period with a bevy of goals totaling four in a span of just over 13 minutes. Steven Ickes scored the first two goals upping his season total to 14. The first was on the power play just 29 seconds into the period from Marshall Beaker and Krzysztof Petryla. The next was at 4:16 from Hayden Zimmerman and Petryla. Lou Versperini continued the onslaught at 6:35 with his fourth of the season on the power play from Beaker and Owen Schrader. Former Panther Trent Benedict rounded out the period scoring at 13:49 from Petryla and Beaker, as those guys each had three assists in the second period.

Davenport did not fold and got things going in the right direction at 6:24 of the third period as mid-semester transfer Sammy Mielock scored his fourth goal of the month on the power play from Jack Kelly and Bryan Fenlon. Just under two minutes later, Jake Alton notched his sixth goal of the season unassisted. Alton got his second goal of the game with the tying-goal at 18:29 with an extra attacker. No one could score in the 3-vs-3 format of a five-minute overtime and during the shootout it was Benedict going first and scoring the lone goal of the shootout. Kyler Lowden stopped 33 shots, giving him 30-plus saves in 16 contests this season. Lowden came up huge in overtime preventing a goal on a couple breakaways. His counterpart Aidan Feddema stopped 22 shots for Calvin.

The Panthers will next face Roosevelt on Friday, Jan. 30 at 8:30 PM inside Patterson Ice Center in GL6 action.
