Davenport Falls to Quincy in Crossover Finale

HAMMOND, Ind. – A strong opening set was not enough for Davenport on Saturday as Quincy took the next three to hand the Panthers a 3-1 loss at Hammond Sportsplex. DU finished the Midwest Region Crossover with a 2-1 record after winning both matches Friday.

The Panthers (13-7) won the opener 25-13 before the Hawks (15-8) responded with wins of 25-21, 25-20 and 25-22. Davenport recorded 13 service aces but finished with a .107 hitting percentage.

Karley Pretzer led DU with 11 kills on a .304 hitting percentage. Abby Alan added 10 kills, four aces and five total blocks for 17 points, while Hayley Carr collected 14 digs and three aces. Madison Berry finished with 20 assists.

Davenport took control early in the first set, turning a 2-2 tie into a 10-3 lead. Rachel Youngblood and Pretzer contributed kills during the stretch, while Alan added an ace. Consecutive Pretzer kills later pushed the advantage to 19-11.

Amelia Werner served two aces during a late four-point run that included a block by Youngblood and Mariya Montgomery, extending the lead to 24-12. A Quincy service error finished the set, 25-13.

DU opened the second with a 5-2 lead before Quincy moved ahead 9-6. Kills from Werner, Montgomery, Pretzer and Alan, along with a Werner ace, helped the Panthers regain an 11-10 advantage.

The Hawks later built an 18-14 lead, but Davenport stayed within reach and scored four consecutive points after trailing 21-17 to tie the set. Quincy answered with four straight points to secure the 25-21 win.

The Panthers responded to a 2-0 deficit in the third with five unanswered points, including kills from Alan and Savanah Weathers and a Carr ace. Quincy countered with a five-point run and eventually built a 21-14 advantage.

Consecutive Maddie Albright aces helped Davenport cut into the deficit. Pretzer added late kills, and Julia Frederick contributed an ace, but the Hawks took the set, 25-20.

Davenport established a 7-1 lead in the fourth behind six consecutive service points from Carr. The stretch included two Carr aces and a block by Werner and Alan. Albright, Werner, Youngblood and Pretzer supplied kills through the middle of the set before an Alan-Montgomery block gave DU a 20-17 lead.

Quincy scored four straight points to move ahead 21-20, but consecutive Alan kills put the Panthers back in front, 22-21. The Hawks claimed the final four points to take the set, 25-22, and complete the match.
