Panthers Battle to the Final Whistle on Senior Day

CALEDONIA, Mich. — The Davenport men's soccer team finished with a 17-15 advantage in shots and matched Parkside with eight shots on goal Sunday afternoon in GLIAC action at Pappas Stadium. The Panthers battled for 90 minutes, creating opportunities on the attacking end but coming up short in their search for an equalizer. An early goal by the Rangers proved to be the difference in the 1-0 setback, as Davenport kept the match within reach throughout the afternoon.

Parkside struck early, as Gio Magana scored at 4:45 to give the Rangers a 1-0 lead. Davenport responded with pressure in the attacking third, earning two corner kicks in the opening two minutes and putting shots on goal from Drew Matyunas, Kevin Hubbell and Ethan Engle. Archie Oliver later hit the woodwork, and the Panthers continued to test goalkeeper Mateusz Pass, forcing two additional saves. Carter McGowan made three saves in the first half, including two in the final two minutes, to keep Davenport within one at the break.

The Panthers looked to even the score after halftime, while McGowan helped keep the deficit at one through a stretch of Parkside pressure from 50:55 to 62:19. McGowan made two saves during that sequence, and a team save also prevented the Rangers from extending their lead. Davenport created further chances through Isiah Meyer, Engle and Matyunas, but Pass turned away all three shots on goal to preserve Parkside's advantage. The Panthers continued to challenge the Rangers down the stretch, but Parkside maintained its narrow lead through the final whistle.

McGowan finished with six saves over 90 minutes, recording three in each half. Oliver led Davenport with four shots, including two on goal, while Matyunas added three shots with two on frame. Engle put both of his attempts on target.

Up next, Davenport hosts Saginaw Valley State on Wednesday, Oct. 21, at 2 p.m. at Pappas Stadium in Caledonia, Mich., for the Panthers' final home game of the season.
