Alan Leads Panthers to Sweep Ahead of Senior Day

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — On the eve of her Senior Day celebration, Abby Alan delivered 14 kills on .444 hitting to lead Davenport past Lake Superior State in straight sets Friday (25-20, 25-13, 25-21).

The Panthers improved to 16-7 overall and 8-5 in GLIAC play, putting away 43 kills on a .306 hitting percentage while holding the Lakers (5-20, 1-12 GLIAC) to 25 kills and an .084 mark.

Alan added two service aces and finished with 17 points, while true freshmen Savanah Weathers and Keira Dommer helped drive the offense. Weathers recorded 11 kills and six digs, and Dommer handed out a team-high 24 assists to go with nine digs. Hayley Carr led the defensive effort with 14 digs and added two assists and a service ace.

Davenport wasted little time establishing control, taking seven of the first eight points behind three early Weathers kills. Amelia Werner, Mariya Montgomery and Alan helped the Panthers stretch their lead to 17-8 before the Lakers made a late push. With LSSU closing within 24-20, Alan finished a Dommer assist to secure the opening set.

The Panthers created even more separation in the second. After opening with a 3-0 lead, Davenport broke the set open with a 7-1 run that turned a 9-5 advantage into a 16-6 cushion. Karley Pretzer supplied two kills during the stretch, while Weathers added another. Alan later delivered a kill and an ace during a four-point surge, helping Davenport roll to a 25-13 win.

LSSU kept the third set close, matching Davenport through a 15-15 tie. Alan then put down two kills and Carr added an ace as the Panthers rattled off four straight points. The Lakers cut the margin to 21-19, but Davenport moved to match point behind two LSSU errors and a Pretzer kill. After the Lakers extended the set with two points, Jaide Wirth finished a Madison Berry assist to complete the sweep.
