UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. — A career-high 17 kills from
Savanah Weathers helped the Davenport University women's volleyball team sweep Saginaw Valley State on Saturday, 25-22, 25-18, 25-18. Weathers also collected 17 digs and three service aces as the Panthers finished with 42 kills and a .246 hitting percentage.
Davenport overcame a five-point deficit in the opening set after the Cardinals moved ahead 17-12. Weathers contributed a kill and an ace during a four-point response that brought the Panthers within one. The teams remained close down the stretch before Davenport scored the final three points to break a 22-22 tie.
Abby Alan and Weathers delivered consecutive kills, and Alan followed with a service ace to secure the set.
Weathers continued to find success in the second, putting down three early kills. With Davenport leading 14-12, the Panthers won seven of the next eight points to stretch their advantage to 21-13. The run included consecutive kills from Weathers, a block from
Amelia Werner and back-to-back aces from Weathers. Late kills from
Karley Pretzer and Alan helped Davenport finish the set and take a 2-0 lead.
Pretzer provided an early boost in the third set with three kills as Davenport built a 9-5 lead.
Rachel Youngblood and
Kaitlyn Marsh also teamed up for a block during that stretch. Saginaw Valley State battled back to tie the score at 14-14, but the Panthers responded with eight of the next nine points. Weathers put Davenport ahead with a kill, then served four straight points to push the lead to 19-14. She later added the match-ending kill to finish the sweep.
Weathers hit .484 for the match, while Pretzer added 10 kills on a .391 hitting percentage and four digs.
Keira Dommer finished with a team-high 21 assists and five digs, and
Hayley Carr recorded 13 digs and a service ace. Davenport held the Cardinals to a .128 hitting percentage.
