Davenport Battles but Falls Twice on Opening Day

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. Davenport University softball opened the UIS Capital City Classic with a pair of setbacks Thursday at Scheels Sports Park, falling 4-0 to Ohio Dominican before dropping a 4-2 decision to Illinois Springfield to move to 0-2 on the young season.

Game 1
In the season opener against Ohio Dominican (1-4), the DU Panthers were limited offensively, finishing with just three hits and no runs. Lexie McCarty paced Davenport with a double—her first as a Panther—while Chloe Parker recorded her first collegiate hit for DU with a single. Ally Prasnjak also added a base hit to open her senior season at the plate.

Ohio Dominican broke through in the second inning when K. Sterling doubled home L. Irvine for a 1-0 lead. The fifth inning proved pivotal, as ODU capitalized on a Davenport throwing error and a double by L. Flores to stretch the advantage to 3-0. A wild pitch in the sixth allowed H. Plymale to score, sealing the 4-0 final.

Hannah Tahaney tossed 4 2/3 innings, allowing five hits and three runs, while Julia Perry added 1 1/3 innings of relief, surrendering one run on one hit. Defensively, Kailyne Luna anchored the infield with four assists at third base, and Sydney Drenth reached base on a walk and swiped her first stolen base as a Panther.

Game 2

In the second game of the day, DU fell 4-2 to Illinois Springfield (8-3). The Prairie Stars capitalized in the third inning, stringing together a series of doubles to plate four runs and seize early control of the contest.

Davenport answered in the fourth inning. Randi Robakowski, making her collegiate debut, delivered a single and later crossed the plate on a fielder's choice off the bat of Ally Prasnjak to trim the deficit to 4-2. Kylie Hegland followed with a walk to extend the inning, but the Panthers were unable to push across another run.

Lyla Reynolds also made her collegiate debut, recording her first career hit as a freshman. Grace Gilbert added to the offensive effort, ripping a single up the middle to continue her sophomore campaign at the plate.

Hailey Whisman earned the start in the circle, tossing three innings while allowing six hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts. Jordan Empie and Kayla Widner combined in relief, with Widner closing the game in strong fashion—striking out two and allowing no hits. Freshmen Empie and Widner both made their collegiate debuts during the contest.
