XENIA, Ohio - The Panthers were unable to complete a full seven innings in either game of Friday's doubleheader against Cedarville at AIA Sports Complex, falling 13-5 in six innings in the opener before dropping a 13-5 decision in five innings in game two. DU showed flashes offensively across the twinbill, combining for 10 runs and two home runs, but two big innings from the Yellow Jackets proved to be the difference.
Game 1
Davenport opened the day with a strong pitching performance from Hannah Tahaney and built an early lead before Cedarville surged late for a 13-5 win in six innings due to the mercy rule.
The Panthers broke through in the second inning when Kailyne Luna doubled and later came around to score on a single by Sydney Drenth, giving Davenport a 1-0 lead. DU added on in the third as Alaina Schwanke launched a two-run homer to right center, scoring Chloe Bruman and extending the advantage to 3-0.
Cedarville answered in the fourth with three unearned runs, highlighted by a three-run home run from Ella Leonard that evened the score at 3-3. Davenport briefly regained control in the sixth when Lexie McCarty ripped a two-run double down the right field line to plate two and put the Panthers back in front, 5-3.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Cedarville exploded for 10 runs in the bottom of the sixth to walk off with the 13-5 victory.
Tahaney turned in 5.2 innings of work, striking out nine while allowing eight hits and four earned runs. She threw 103 pitches, including 71 strikes. Julia Perry and Jordan Empie also saw action in relief.
At the plate, Schwanke led Davenport with two hits, including her home run, and two RBIs. Luna collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice, while McCarty added two hits, a double and two RBIs. Bruman chipped in a hit, scored a run and stole a base.
Game 2
The Panthers came out swinging in game two, putting together a four-run first inning, but Cedarville responded with an 11-run fourth inning to claim another 13-5 win in five innings.
Davenport struck first in the opening frame when Randi Robakowski reached third on a throwing error and scored on an Ally Prasnjak single. Luna followed with an RBI single before Chloe Parker connected on a two-run home run, giving the Panthers an early 4-1 advantage.
The Yellow Jackets trimmed the deficit in the second on a solo home run by Anna Weathers, making it 4-2, before completely shifting the momentum in the fourth. CU sent 16 batters to the plate and scored 11 runs in the inning, using a two-run double from Chesnie Patton and a two-run home run by Brynley Rung to take a commanding 13-4 lead.
DU scored once more in the fifth when Ashley Sturgill, pinch running for Schwanke, crossed the plate on a muffed throw, but the Panthers could not extend the game beyond the fifth inning.
Hailey Whisman started in the circle and pitched 3.0 innings with three strikeouts, while Schwanke also worked 1.0 inning in relief.
Parker powered the offense with a home run and two RBIs. Robakowski finished with two hits, a stolen base and a run scored, while Prasnjak added an RBI and a run scored. Luna also drove in a run and scored once for the Panthers.
