Panthers Secure Home Opening Victory Over Lewis

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Davenport University women's lacrosse team edged Lewis in a close 11–10 match on Sunday at DU Turf Field. The game was highlighted by Davenport's effective player-up plays, scoring three goals with the extra player advantage.

The game commenced with Kacie Stolarek securing the draw control for Davenport. Brianna Rodriguez opened the scoring for the Panthers, capitalizing on a player-up opportunity assisted by Addison Roe at 12:37. Alyssa Bird extended the lead with a free position goal at 11:35. The Flyers responded with back-to-back goals, but Davenport's Gabby Basha and Jenna Gillis responded, pushing the lead to 5–2 by the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Flyers opened up with four straight goals in the opening 6:30. DU responded with a goal by Basha, assisted by Rodriguez, at 7:02, leveling the score at 6–6. However, the Flyers regained momentum with two more goals, putting the Flyers ahead 8–6 heading into the half.

Davenport surged in the third quarter, overcoming an initial deficit to take the lead against the Flyers. The momentum shifted when Roe scored with an assist from Elly Teliczan at 6:11, leveling the score at 8–8. Davenport capitalized on the Flyers' penalties, with Basha scoring a free-position goal at 1:29, followed by Bird's player-up goal from a free-position shot at 0:19. The quarter concluded with Davenport leading 9–8, having scored all three goals in this quarter while keeping the Flyers scoreless.

In the fourth quarter, Davenport maintained its lead with a pivotal goal by Roe at 10:15, converting a free position shot. Basha extended the advantage with a goal assisted by Mika Kulynych at 8:25, shortly before the Flyers called a timeout. Despite efforts from the Flyers, including a player-up goal at 7:24 and another free position goal with 48 seconds remaining, the Panthers held on for an 11–10 victory.
