CALEDONIA, Mich. — The Davenport baseball team extended its win streak to five games and completed a four-game weekend sweep of Roosevelt with a 7-6 walk-off win in 10 innings on Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Athletic Complex.
Carson Lindau came in to pinch it in the 10th inning and his single to left field drove in
Cam Johnson and
Ben Korson with the winning runs.
Roosevelt took an early lead in the second inning as Maxwell Bowers scored on a groundout after reaching base with a single and advancing on a steal. The score was 1–0 in favor of the Lakers after two innings.
In the fourth inning, the Lakers added another run when Bowers scored on a passed ball. Davenport responded in its half of the inning when
Dylan Pawenski tripled and
Aiden Warn singled him home, followed by a
Travis Liford RBI double that brought Warn in to score. The score was tied 2–2 through four innings.
Davenport pulled ahead for the first time in the fifth inning.
Joey Barboza doubled and advanced to third on a throwing error, eventually scoring on
Wyatt Epple's RBI single. This put Davenport ahead 3–2 after five innings.
Davenport extended its lead in the sixth inning. Korson singled and was driven home by
Cam Johnson's RBI double, making it 4–2 in favor of Davenport after six innings.
The Lakers tied the game again in the seventh inning. Tyler Ruete and Kyle Jannenga each scored on a groundout and a single, respectively. The score was tied 4–4 through seven innings.
In the tenth inning, Roosevelt regained the lead with two runs on a single by Alejandro Munoz off
Brandon Skorupski. However, Davenport mounted a strong comeback. Liford singled with one out after going down in the count 0-2 and scored on a
Cam Johnson double down the right field line. Lindau, pinch-hitting for Barboza in the ninth spot of the lineup, delivered the decisive two-RBI single to secure the victory for Davenport.
Easton Remick delivered a solid performance for Davenport, pitching five innings and allowing only one earned run on four hits, while striking out a season-high six batters.
Gabe Helder came in relief and pitched 1 2/3 innings, conceding two earned runs on two hits and issuing one walk.
Brandon Skorupski followed with three innings of work for his longest outing of the season, giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out four.
Jimmy Amptmann closed the game efficiently, recording the win (1-0) with a single groundout on five pitches.
Johnson led the offense with a career-high four hits and two RBIs, including two doubles, contributing significantly to the team's run production. Pawenski recorded one triple and drew two walks, adding a crucial run to the scoreboard. Liford collected three hits in four at-bats with a double and a walk.
Sam Clay went 2-for-4 with a walk and strikeout. Barboza had a double in three at-bats and scored a run.
Looking ahead, the Davenport Panthers (12-14, 4-0 GLIAC) will face the No. 7 Wayne State Warriors (19-3, 3-1 GLIAC) at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 27 at The Farm in Caledonia.
