Early Deficit, Extra-Inning Loss Sink Panthers

CALEDONIA, Mich. — Davenport University (2-2 GLIAC) dropped both games of a Sunday doubleheader to Saginaw Valley State (12-8, 2-0 GLIAC) at Farmers Athletic Complex, falling 12–2 in five innings and 5–3 in eight innings.

Game 1
The Panthers fell behind early and could not recover as SVSU used a six-run first inning to take control of the opener. Olivia Elliott's two-run home run highlighted the frame, giving the Cardinals a 6–0 advantage after one.

Saginaw Valley added three more runs in the second inning on RBI singles from Ella Schneider and Ella Reifschneider, extending the lead to 9–0.

Davenport broke through in the fifth inning, capitalizing on a pair of Saginaw Valley errors. Kailyne Luna reached base before Colette Sutton hit an infield dribbler that allowed Luna to score. On the same play, a throwing error brought home Ally Prasnjak, cutting the deficit to 9–2. However, the Cardinals answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, including Olivia Elliott's second two-run homer of the game, to secure the 12–2 run-rule victory.

In the circle, Hailey Whisman made the start, while Jordan Empie and Kayla Widner followed in relief. Widner provided a bright spot, allowing just two earned runs over three innings while striking out four. Offensively, Alaina Schwanke led Davenport with two hits, while Luna, Sydney Drenth and Randi Robakowski chipped in with one hit.

Game 2
DU came out strong in the second game, plating three runs in the first inning. Chloe Bruman opened with a bunt single before Luna doubled to bring her home. After a walk to Prasnjak, Schwanke delivered an RBI double, and a wild pitch later scored Prasnjak to give the Panthers a 3–1 lead.

SVSU answered in the third inning, as Elliott delivered again with a two-run single to tie the game at 3–3.

The game remained deadlocked until the eighth inning, when the Cardinals broke through with two runs. A wild pitch brought in the go-ahead run, and Natalie Savage followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 5–3 and seal the sweep.

Hannah Tahaney started in the circle for Davenport, tossing 5.1 innings while allowing three earned runs. Alaina Schwanke added 2.2 innings of relief. At the plate, Chloe Bruman recorded a hit and scored a run, while Kailyne Luna added a double, a run scored, and an RBI. Schwanke also contributed with a double and an RBI and Ashley Sturgill chipped in with a double.
